public art in Portland

After trying to describe this public art project to several people, I decided that I needed to post a few photos of it. We stumbled upon this 6-month public art project on Saturday afternoon at Mt Tabor park. A local artist received a lofty grant to create 10 art pieces that are being installed at various public areas around Portland. Each “acupuncture needle” symbolizes a meridian on the body of the “City of Portland”. The needle at Mt Tabor Park represents the lung meridian. The needle at South Waterfront park symbolizes the kidney meridian. And so on…

The project brings awareness to the City of Portland’s 25 year plan and how it will effect the rivers, parks, roads, bridges, pathways, etc. I think it’s a pretty cool project. To learn more, go to http://acuportland.org

hump day

After a great afternoon of tromping around Mt. Tabor park and talking “camera – shop” with a friend, we ended the evening at Dingo’s sipping on yummy margaritas and chomping on cheesy bean dip. I really can’t think of a better way to spend hump day during this wintery, arctic chill we’re having in Portland.

Yep, Portland is the new black! Thanks, Elice!

soap box

These arctic chilly days we’re experiencing in the northwest make me think about those warm days we had this summer in Portland. In August, the weather is perfect. The temperature fluctuates between low 80′s and low 90′s. Although we did have some freaky record breaking heat waves of several consecutive days over 100.

Every year in August, there is an annual soap-box derby race on top of Mt. Tabor which basically amounts to hundreds of Portland hipsters drinking PBR all day and hooting & hollering at the boxes as they go whizzzzzing down the race track pathway. I was quite relieved that we made it in time for the final races before the day ended. I can’t wait until next year’s race.

stage

I was so bummed out yesterday when we hiked all the way up to Mt Tabor park for my stage performance debut and not a soul showed up. I mean I know it’s been cold and rainy outside, but I thought Portlanders were rain warriors.

crisp.

Yesterday had to have been one of the most gorgeous days ever. I was only about a block away from my house when I urgently pulled the car over so I could get out to capture a few click, click, clicks of that sky. I couldn’t get enough of the beauty and decided to walk up to Mt. Tabor Park to take it all in. Each step I took from my doorstep to the top of Mt. Tabor was full of delight. I couldn’t get enough of that perfect blue sky, the sun shining through those white puffy clouds, the feeling of the crisp, fresh air on my cheeks, and the sounds of nature singing. It’s days like this that I want to capture the perfect image and perhaps place it in my hands and eat it all up! What an amazing experience it was for me to finally capture this new season in my new home. The entire time on my walk I kept thinking to myself, “Thank you, Universe! Thank you! What a truly gorgeous day it is!”

I had once been resistant to the thought of summertime coming to a screeching halt. I changed my mind after yesterday.

This photo got “Photo of the Week” via Portland’s Neighborhood online network: http://community.portlandneighborhood.com/profiles/blogs/portland-blog-this-week-in-23

Again, I am humbled.
