this ain’t paris

This ain’t Paris, baby. This is Portland, Oregon!

I am so lucky to live in a city that embraces art, music, and an overall hip-culture. I don’t have to go far before I can stumble upon an artist like this guy who had his paints, palate, and easel propped on the corner of Belmont in SE Portland. There were no jokes thrown around about this artist expressing himself  freely on an every day street corner. But rather he was left alone to whip up a masterpiece painting while life past him by. How awesome is that!?!!!

Hence, another one of the hundred plus reasons why I chose to live in Portland, Oregon.

my first photography show

I am totally honored to have the opportunity to showcase my first photography exhibit for the entire month of April at Gigibar here in Portland. The exhibit is already up and I heard from Gigi that folks are enjoying several pieces as they sip away at their yummy beverages and snacks.
On Saturday, April 10th, I will be hosting an open house / art reception from 11:00am – 1:00pm. If you have time, I’d love for you and your people to stop by the Gigibar located at 5941 SE Division Street, PDX, 97206 (on the corner of SE 60th and SE Division). Lite snacks will be available.
Thank you for all your support!
My best,
Trina

blossoms…

….as I stood there trying to capture the perfect photo of these gorgeous blossoms a woman passed me on the sidewalk. I was so tired and delirious after a night of no sleep since the break in.. I turned to the woman and said, “aren’t they beautiful. They’re so soft you want to sleep with them…”

She stared at me.

Deer. In. The. Headlights.

…and kept walking.

There is nothing spectacular about these photos other than I day dream about some day — sooner than later BUYING my first home. I really like the look of these houses. Yep yep..hopefully someday I’ll buy a home like these.

Happy Friday! Whoooohooooo!

your vote

I am beside myself excited about my first photography exhibit at the Gigibar in April. I went over to Gigibar yesterday to meet with Gigi. She was quite helpful to go over all the details I need to know in order to prepare (i.e. supplies I need to install my work, what the dimensions are on the wall spaces, how to sell my photography, how to promote my work via postcards or business cards, and perhaps having an art opening at the space).

In the meantime, I have started to plan out what 10 photographs I will display in the Espresso / Wine Bar. In order to give myself a kick start, I asked my friends on facebook to vote on 1 of their favorite photos I have listed on this blog under the tab “favorites”. So far, the majority vote is for this photo called, “Reflections”. Thanks, pals! There is still time to vote. So if you want to take a minute to look at the photos – click on”Favorites” and please leave a comment with your vote. Thank you in advance. :)

I must thank Gigi in advance for giving me this opportunity to display my photography. Thank you, Gigi!!!! May your espresso wine bar always be prosperous!

Portland murals

If you like public art, then Portland is the place to visit. Portland murals can be found on practically every street corner especially in the SE quadrant of the city. I pass by this particular one at least once a week. It speaks volumes about not only the thriving, robust art community in Portland, but it also highlights the coffee drinking trend that is rampant here.

bridges

I drove over the Burnside Bridge here in Portland the other day. I know.. you’re so excited, right?!!? Well, it was the first time that I’ve had to stop on the bridge, because a small barge was passing down the river under the bridge. I was quite bored sitting there…okay well, I did have my camera and got a few clicks in like this one.

But what I was really wanting to listen to was my sister’s sound / audio installation she did in Seattle on the Fremont Bridge. Her project is called, “Bridge Talks Back” and will be available during daytime bridge openings by calling toll free 1-800-761-9941 through April 2010.There’s also a slight chance some of the photos I took at her project opening will be used for the City of Seattle Mayor’s Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs Annual Report. Pretty cool, huh?!!

But really, you should call the number. It’s a cool compilation. Do it now!

art

Art. I believe that digital photography is a form of art. One must learn to soften the eyes in order to appreciate some photographs. I’d like to present this photo as a work of art. The objects in the photo are lights; holiday lights and a chandelier light. Then, with the use of photo editing; a bit of added shadow and highlight the photography becomes a work of art.

two

It’s been 2 months since I launched this daily photo blog. I am already feeling proud of some accomplishments I’ve made with the blog. For one, I’ve stuck with it by creating a daily routine for two solid months. I think some genius out there decided that if you practice something for 30days, you’ve set yourself up for a good solid routine. Part of my routine has been to force (I don’t really see it as forcing, but I’m not sure what other word to use) myself to get out and click, click, click every day. I think this routine of carrying my camera with me at all times has taught me to understand that there are in fact several opportunities for 1 great daily photo – no matter how routine or mundane daily life tends to be.

Another is that when I first launched this site I had no idea if anyone would be interested in following my blog. I feel good to be able to say that as of this morning there are 1,666 (yikes, quick… someone “CLICK”) hits on my blog. For the record, my blog does not count the times I view it to see how it appears on the front side. I’ve also discovered that 4 people / bloggers have subscribed to my blog. Wow. 4 people are actually interested in following my daily photo blog! Pretty Cool!

I think the final accomplishment would be that I’m learning to think outside of the box. I’ve been practicing methods of using composition, textures, patterns, light or lighting, and creating an abstract image in my photos. I am also trying to practice not taking typical cliche photos. I do understand that at times these photos are fun and warm the hearts of many, but my intentions for doing digital photography fall more into line with using my artist abilities. Exercising an artistic style is what make my creative juices flow. I think this practice will also help me to stand out a bit more from other photographers.
