…a queer divine dissatisfaction

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. … No artist is pleased. [There is] no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.”

-from The Life and Work of Martha Graham

Twas a bit challenging to capture the right image of “toilet” for this week’s photo challenge, but I like this one. And, I like this photo too. Oh, and I took it with my iPhone. Enjoy! :)

meet Jamal

Meet Jamal. Jamal means “camel” in Arabic. I picked him up at a local toy store the other day. I’ve decided that start a new photo series of the plethora of bicycles and bike racks in Portland. What a better way to make the story of the photo a bit more interesting than to insert jamal into the photo. Plus, I think he’s really soft and cuddly. Since he’ll be really busy during this photo series – he’s got to stock up on his fluid intake.

the essence of Portland…

I was out and about yesterday with camera en tow. The weather was a bit iffy at first; pissy rain, then sunshine, pissy rain, then sunshine. Later, the day ended up being a beautiful Fall day filled with puffy, white clouds, blue patches of sky, and a cool breeze. Kari and I did what we’re notorious for doing on the weekends; we took the bus up to “NW 23rd” neighborhood, wandered that hood, and ended up walking all the walk to the waterfront. Of course it was football Sunday. Kari has been jonesin’ to watch a game day on the big screen since we don’t own a t.v.

As we got closer to the waterfront, we noticed there was a what I’d like to call “Dude Bro” sports bar with several flat screens on the wall airing every game possible. So, we had to stop in so Kari could get her fix. As I sat there – wondering what the hell I was doing at sports bar in Portland on a Sunday – I stared into the street and began to daydream. Off into the distance along the sidewalk this bicycle and its shadow caught my eye. As the dude bros and the women on their arms shouted at the big screens- I pulled out the ole camera as a way to escape from that place. This shadow of the bicycle caught my eye. That is one of the many reasons why I love Portland so much. It seems like almost everyone – except for me and Kari (hopefully we’ll get our bikes soon) owns a bike. On any given day – morning, noon, or night you can find dozens of cyclists filling the streets. ….the essence of Portland. Thank gawd sports bars on every corner are not the essence of Portland!

I wonder…

Kari Strong

I think it’s funny after these years of taking up the craft of photography and bugging Kari to be my model – that NOW she wants to do a photo shoot with me. Shooooooot! ;)

Y La Bamba at Mississippi Studios

I saw Y La Bamba last night at the Mississippi Studios. It was their newest record release debut. What a great show they put on. I love the sound of their alternative indie / latin / folk rock tunes. I think I lost count for how many instruments their members’ played; bass guitars, acoustic guitar, snares, tamborines, bells, xylophone, and a few more.

I took these 2 photos with my iPhone 3Gs. They turned out noisey, but I like what I captured. I’m really diggin’ all this local northwest music. I’ve seen 4 Live shows in the past month. Madonna who? Prince who? Lady Gagaaaa huh?

Bibi McGill - Lead Guitarist for Beyonce

How awesome is she to be so full of Life! What an experience I had doing this photo shoot for a little over an hour – blitz!

I tell yah, I’m still on cloud 9 and my thighs are still feelin’ it – from chasing her around the park during the shots;

squating, stooping, bouncing up and down to find the best perspective shots.

rockin the Portland scene

I feel like if I can do a photo shoot with the amazingly talented Bibi, then I can do a shoot with anyone! Bring it on! :)

BadAss Bibi McGill! :)

Ms Shi

So prior to my photo shoot on Saturday morning, I had my buddy Shilah there with me as my production assistant. I told her that I needed to check the natural light and test some shots on her – since the skies were grey when we first arrived. Yah, I’ve GOT to say that Shi ain’t so shy! :-) And I am so thankful that she was a willing model prior to the photo shoot with Bibi! It was a fun quick shoot with Shilah! And, we’ve got more plans for a REAL shoot.

Wohooooooo! Is what Shi has to say about THAT!
