runstrongrun

In support of Kari running for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society with Team in Training, I am posting her fundraising letter in hopes that YOU will feel inclined to donate. Thank you in advance for your support. Here is Kari’s letter:

Racing to Save Lives

What I am doing:
I am running in the Portland ½ Marathon this year on 10-10-10. I’ve never been a runner. In fact, the only reason I couldn’t get an A in high school P.E. is, because I couldn’t run the mile. Times have changed, and so have my goals.

On May 5th, I signed up to become a member of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) – Team In Training (TNT) – program. Team In Training will guide me in my journey to accomplish my goal and in turn I will raise funds to support this worthy cause. Over the next 5 months, I will be on a strict training regimen and will run over 400 miles. This is where You come in.

Why I am doing it:
25 years ago this year, my older brother Kevin lost his life to Leukemia. Ever since then, I feel there has been a little piece of me missing.

Kevin was diagnosed on March 28th 1983 with acute myelogenous leukemia. He was 10 years old, I was 8, our little sister Jaime was 3, and our little brother D.J. was not quite a year old. My younger siblings and I were so young that we didn’t understand the full extent of what was happening to Kevin. The one regret I have is not loving my big brother while I could, while he was here with me. Instead I was a messy, pesky little sister who did whatever I could to annoy him. I guess that’s what little sisters do.

Kevin undertook a lot of chemotherapy treatments. Something a child should never have to endure. In 1983, there were not many options for Leukemia patients. Somehow my parents managed to hold our family together despite the constant sadness of having to see their child in continual pain.

Kevin needed a bone marrow transplant. Because Kevin and I had the same mother and father, I was tested to see if I would be a match. Nothing in life is perfect, and my DNA wasn’t a perfect match. On September 16, 1985, Kevin lost his battle with Leukemia.

This is why I choose to run. I want to do for Kevin today what I wasn’t able to do 25 years ago. I am running to help find a cure for Leukemia. I am running to help make those families’ lives who are stricken with blood cancers a little easier. I am running so no other little sister has to lose her big brother before they can grow to become best friends. And, so no other older brother has to suffer the way my brother did.

What your donation does:
In 1983, not only was treatment limited, but so was family assistance. Families of blood cancer patients had to rely on one another for support. Today, the LLS is there to provide support to patients, families, and others who are directly impacted by these blood diseases.

This is what your money provides:
•A donation of $25 provides patients and their loved ones with FREE booklets that contain up-to-date information on their disease and help them make informed decisions about their treatment options.
•A donation of $50 makes possible a Family Support group with a trained facilitator where comfort can be found and experiences can be shared among patients and family members.
•A donation of $100 helps supply laboratory researchers with supplies and materials critical to carrying out their search for cures.
•$500 could provide patient aid to a person with Leukemia or a related cancer for a year.
•A donation of $1,000 makes possible one- on-one conversations with health care specialists who provide patients with information about their disease, treatment options, and helps prepare them with questions for their health care team.

How you can support me:
I NEED your support to help accomplish my goals. My goal is to raise $2010 by September 16th. I appreciate any amount you can donate. It all adds up and remember every donation is 100% tax deductable.

Also, please don’t keep this message to yourself. Please share this letter with everyone you know.

If you want to see how my training is coming along you can visit and share my blog http://runstrongrun.wordpress.com/.

Please donate by visiting my website http://pages.teamintraining.org/oswim/portland10/kstrong.

Thank you for all your support!
Kari

trains…

This weekend, I took the train from Portland to Seattle to see my sister, mom, and family.

It was such a trip for me (compared to the airport) to walk from the taxi cab and into the train station. It’s like going back in time about 50 years ago. There is no security. No chaos. No rush to the gate to jump onto the plane before it takes off. The entire train station feels very calm. I walked in, proceeded to the ticket counter to get my seating assignment, and then over to the gate to get in line with the other passengers. And, that was basically it. When the time came to begin boarding the train, there was an announcement over the loud speaker to begin lining up and board the train.

Once I was seated on the train, the experience of the train ride was very relaxing. And, what usually feels like eons during a 3+ hour flight felt like nothing on the train. Once we arrived into Seattle, I still felt relaxed and ready to take on Seattle! Whooooot Whooot! All Aboard!

“chooooDonnnEvenKnowwwwMeeeeeee”

Nope!! I don’t even know this guy. But I got a cool “vintage” shot of him yesterday at the local school park. He even smiled for the camera, too!

Tea is Tao

Last night, I went to the Tao of Tea. I basically Zen’d out for the 2 hours I was there with Sprina. The menu has pages and pages and a plethora of types of tea to drink. I tried the “Shanti”. It was very spicey with tastes of fennel and licorice (kinda the same, I know.).

This place is such a great option for vegetarians or tea lovers alike. And, the decor is pretty cool too!

2 thumbs up!

My photo used in the City of Seattle….

I am so excited! I have found out that this photo that I took during my sister’s public art project last Fall in Seattle was used for the City of Seattle Mayor’s Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs – 2009 Report to the Community. (see page 14 of the report) How whooping exciting is that!?!!! Here’s a highlight that I posted on October 3rd about Kristen’s art project:

The requirement was that she had all summer to create an art piece that would be temporarily displayed on the bridge. During her summer residency, one of the bridge operator towers was converted into her art studio where she integrated a “sound” art piece as the display. It was quite an incredible experience to participate as a volunteer or an Ambassadors of the Fremont Bridge Talks Back project. You see, the art piece that she developed was a sound piece that integrated and orchestrated all of the day-to-day sounds one would hear while crossing the bridge. For the next eight months (until April 2010), anytime the bridge opens for ships to pass through you will be able to hear the sound piece that she created. You can also call a toll free number to listen to this sound and a few heart felt stories from people who called in earlier this summer and spoke about their feelings or memories about the bridge (1-800-761-9941). During the event on Saturday, Kristen recruited 100 volunteers to come out for 3 hours to participate as ambassadors of the bridge. Each volunteer wore an event t-shirt, an orange handkerchief, and processioned on one of 4 corners of the bridge while holding a sign. The bridge was decorated with colorful flags to incorporate all of the colors that the bridge had once been painted. Each time the bridge would open, horn players would come out of each tower to toot toot toot, the sound piece would play along the bridge, and all the volunteers would procession in a celebratory manner.

Pretty cool, eh? :)

dog face

This Jack Russell looked like the cutest pup sitting outside the store – awaiting its master’s return. I couldn’t help but take a quick few shots of his face. As a thank you for letting me take the snapshots, I put my hand out as a way to say hello and to try to scratch his head. Nope. He wasn’t up for it. Kari put out her hand to say hello, too. Nope again. He definitely wasn’t having it – after he about nipped at Kari’s hand.

Oh well. He’s still cute!

?por que no?

One of my favorite taquerias in Portland is “?Por Que No?” on SE Hawthorne. First, I love the decor inside the place. The walls are painted bright, bold colors, the plethora of mirrors on the walls add a vintage feeling to the dining room, there are strings of colorful lights throughout the restaurant, and there is always upbeat music piped in.

Oh, and did I tell you about the food and drinks? The camarones tacos are to die for; filled with shredded cabbage, chunks of pineapple, sauted chile seasoning, and juicy grilled shrimp curled up screaming, “Eat me, bitch!”

Kari and I many times love to split the bean and rice bowl which comes in a clay pot.  It’s one goopy mess of love filled with spanish rice, refried beans, queso fresco, guacamole, chipotle sauce, crema, cilantro, and a squeeze of fresh lime wedge. This bowl will make your mouth and stomach tremble with excitement (the good kind).

The agua frescas are homemade and sit on the front counter top in large glass jugs. Yesterday, Por Que No was serving agua verde and a mango peach blend. Oh, and add a few shots of tequila or rum if you want more love in it.

If you’re not already convinced that this is the best taqueria in town, then the never ending line out the front door and down the sidewalk might make a stronger statement. Go on! Ask anyone in that line why they’re waiting in a long ass line in the pouring rain.

this ain’t paris

This ain’t Paris, baby. This is Portland, Oregon!

I am so lucky to live in a city that embraces art, music, and an overall hip-culture. I don’t have to go far before I can stumble upon an artist like this guy who had his paints, palate, and easel propped on the corner of Belmont in SE Portland. There were no jokes thrown around about this artist expressing himself  freely on an every day street corner. But rather he was left alone to whip up a masterpiece painting while life past him by. How awesome is that!?!!!

Hence, another one of the hundred plus reasons why I chose to live in Portland, Oregon.

weekly photo challenge #3: window

I think this week’s photo challenge shot for “window” pretty much takes the cake. I was fretting all week long about not knowing how or where I would find this perfect “Window” photo. The weather this week in Portland has been pretty wonky; gorgeous blue skies one minute, then hail dropping through the next, and then rain rain rain. And, I mean the crappy pourrrrrring rain. As I was driving home and crossing the Burnside Bridge yesterday, the image was right in front of me. I quickly scrambled for my camera as I attempted to keep both hands on the wheel. Click Click Click. And there it was. WINDOW.

Note to group: Do not attempt to try this while driving your vehicle.

may showers at pioneer square

On my way home from work today, I thought I’d try to get some practice shots in for tomorrow’s weekly photo challenge “window’. I was at the stop light in front of Pioneer Square and looked over into the square. There were a bunch of afternoon commuters standing closely under a giant umbrella stand. In any other city, this May rain would be a bummer, but since it’s Portland, Oregon we all just function like ducks. Next…..

p.s. This photo somehow reminds me of a shot that Megan McIsaac would shoot. Check her out. She is very talented with the camera.

red wall

Oh, what I would give to have an upgraded camera and more time during my days to do photography. In the meantime, I take photos while at a stop light on my way to and from work. Once I get home at night, I’m pooped. Oh and, I forgot to mention that I would love to paint an accent wall in my house just like this one day. What a happy PSU wall that is!
